Two weeks of hands-on large animal work alongside a Belizean veterinarian who knows every farm in the district. You'll learn examination techniques, analyze specimens in the lab, help at a free small animal clinic, and visit working farms. You'll go home with practical skills and stories for every vet school interview.
Lectures cover the selection, nutrition, reproduction, and management of horses, beef cattle, goats, swine, and sheep, along with anatomy and physiology, animal diseases, and the animal agriculture economy. You'll also see practical applications like ration formulation, disease prevention, artificial insemination, and crossbreeding, then put them into practice in labs and on farms around San Ignacio.
On Saturday, you help run a free small animal clinic for the community, which may include vaccinations, physical exams, or surgeries, depending on what's needed. Saturday afternoon is yours, and there is an optional, affordable beach trip on Sunday. The program is designed for veterinary, pre-veterinary, animal science, and zoology students.
